Why BPM matters when you practice

Practicing too fast reinforces mistakes. Here is how to use tempo as a learning tool.

Why BPM matters when you practice

Speed is a byproduct of precision. When you try to play a complex riff at its original tempo before mastering its movements, you are not practicing the riff; you are practicing your mistakes. The metronome is not just a tool for keeping time, it is a microscope for your technique. Lowering the tempo exposes the tension in your hands, the excess movement in your picking, and sloppy notes. InstrumentGym's Progressive Tempo system is designed on this exact principle: we start your exercise at a lower percentage of your target BPM (usually 65%). By raising the tempo gradually and automatically, your brain assimilates the correct movement before having to worry about speed. Master the movement in slow motion, and the speed will come on its own.
