Mastering the fretboard: Beyond pentatonic boxes

Break the plateau of always playing in the same position. Strategies to see the neck as an interconnected map.

Mastering the fretboard: Beyond pentatonic boxes

The first time you learn box 1 of the minor pentatonic scale, the world opens up. Suddenly you can improvise. The problem is that many guitarists build a house in that box and never move out. True mastery of the fretboard happens when you stop seeing isolated frets and start seeing intervals and relationships. If you only know how to play a phrase at the fifth fret, your vocabulary is limited by your geography. Smart practice requires forcing yourself to translate your favorite licks to different strings and uncomfortable positions. By practicing with InstrumentGym's interactive visual guide, we expose you to different fingerings and position shifting. Training these horizontal movements across the neck is what finally erases the imaginary lines between the "boxes" and allows you to navigate the guitar with total freedom.
